Meet Jen Welter, the NFL’s first-ever lady coach, who just signed on with the Arizona Cardinals. (Woot woot!) Head coach Bruce Arians brought her on board to train the team’s linebackers after famously hinting last spring that he saw no reason why women couldn’t coach in the NFL.
It’s a smart move: At just 5’2” and 130 pounds, Welter is a former collegiate rugby player who crushed it for 14 seasons of pro football in the Women’s Football Alliance. Oh, and she also has a master’s degree in sports psychology and a PhD in psychology--which we have to imagine comes in handy when dealing with 300-pound men who are jumping on top of one another.
So mark your calendars for August 15: It’s the Cardinals’ first game of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs. Jen will be there.
