Pop, country, rock, rap.... Whatever the genre, it was an undeniably good year for breakout female artists. Let’s revisit, shall we?

Charli XCX

Why yes, we’ve had “Boom Clap” on repeat since June. Judge away.

Iggy Azalea

Speaking of Charli XCX, she and I-G-G-Y have racked up nearly 400 million YouTube hits for “Fancy” alone. That’s almost as many times as you’ve had it stuck in your head.

Meghan Trainor

America is officially all about that base. We here at PureWow are also all about Sione Kelepi (the fabulous man in the khaki shorts). In fact, he came over to teach us some clutch dance moves.

Jessie J

Remember a teeny little ditty by the name of “Bang, Bang”? Funny story: It’s not actually an Ariana Grande song (at least not primarily). The track took over the radio (and our lives), thanks to this UK belt machine. “Burning Up,” however, is the dark horse of any workout playlist.

FKA Twigs

You might know her as Robert Pattinson’s enviable other half. We know her as The Tonight Show musical guest who took our breath away using basically just a scarf.

Tove Lo

Terrible decisions following an even more terrible breakup? Been there, girl. Even though “High All the Time” was her runaway hit, we’re rather partial to “Not on Drugs.”

Some days you really need a moody jam. And that’s when this Cali twentysomething and her incredible album, Goddess, come in handy.

Brandy Clark

Like a little more twang with your angst? This rising country star may be more your speed. Her debut album technically released at the end of 2013, but thanks to a national tour with Jennifer Nettles (oh, and that “Best New Artist” Grammy nod), this was her year.

St. Vincent

Ah, that kooky gray mane. It’s almost as good as her horn section.

There are very few things we love more than a good R&B slow jam--especially when it involves a raspy, lilting voice like hers. That’s why SZA just might be our personal favorite discovery of 2014.
