Why not outsource the job? A new business called A Song for Us specializes in writing tunes for people who are getting married, celebrating a birthday or even just wanting to say “I’m sorry” in a unique way.
Set up two one-hour Skype sessions with songwriter Lisa Donnelly and tell her stories and details about the recipient and whatever mood you want to communicate. Donnelly will then write up a lyric sheet, get your approval and record your song in a pro studio with her own acoustic guitar accompaniment and sweet, soulful vocals. (She regularly performs at Hotel Café and the Viper Room, so she’s got the goods.)
