3 DIY Holiday Decorating Ideas
Easy festive flourishes for the home
The holidays are fast approaching, and what better time of year to go all Martha Stewart. Here, three simple decor ideas you can make in an afternoon.
Small Gourd Garland
All you need is an assortment of miniature gourds, twine and a drill with a fine bit. Drill a hole through the center of each gourd--thinking about how you want to orient it on the strand--and then run the twine through all of the holes using an embroidery needle to connect the gourds. Tie a knot at both ends to set in place. Hang inside above the mantel or outside along a picket fence.
Fragrant Herb Wreath
Start with clippings of fresh bay laurel, rosemary, eucalyptus, rose hip or any other sturdy herbs you fancy. Form each herb into a small bundle and tie the stems together with a clear hair band. Affix each bundle to a wire wreath form (10 or 12 inches will do) with green floral wire until you’ve completed the wreath. Be sure to place the bundles so that the stems are covered. Top it off with an elegant bow. Bonus: You can use the dried herbs for cooking in a pinch.
Start by finding a cool container--copper watering can, shabby-chic wooden planter, ceramic vase. Pick up a variety of pine branches and other accents like cedar, pinecones, atriplex or arborvitae from a Christmas tree farm or local florist. Cut branches to size and fill your vessel. The key is to go full and keep exposed stems below the top of your container. Keep in a cool place and change the water every day.
