In general, we’re pretty aware of the foods we should avoid (or at least limit). You know, candy, soda, anything processed—the usuals. But we weren’t totally aware of all the foods we should be eating more of. As it turns out, there are certain ingredients that especially important for women to incorporate into their diet. From preventing bone loss and balancing hormones to boosting energy and lowering cholesterol, here are ten healthy foods that boast tons of benefits to women in particular.

Onions

Onions are incredibly healthful (they’re anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, rich in vitamins B and C, and more), but they’re especially good for ladies because they help prevent bone loss, which leads to osteoporosis.

Red-Pepper Flakes

In addition to being a good source of vitamin A, red-pepper flakes are naturally thermogenic, meaning they produce heat in the body and stimulate the metabolism. They also may help curb appetite and hinder fat storage.

Swiss Chard

A more than suitable alternative to kale, Swiss chard is a low-cal source of phytoestrogens, plant steroids that help maintain hormonal balance. It’s also an excellent source of iron, calcium, folate and vitamins B, C, E and K.
