You know the sensation you get when you walk into a room and feel good all over? Turns out, you have the beauty of color combinations to thank. Watch as interior designer Genevieve Gorder takes a look at the Valspar 2016 Colors of the Year and brings them each to life.
Genevieve's vibrant style and bubbly personality have made her one of America's favorite interior designers (you may recognize her from her HGTV show or by her impeccably decorated apartment). She's partnered with the color pros at Valspar to take their four livable color trend palettes and give them each a style profile. How does she do it? Let's get inside her head.
Behind the Scenes
Getting in the Mood
You have Pinterest (bless). Interior designers have mood boards. With the Valspar 2016 Colors of the Year on her left, Genevieve begins to craft the type of person that would live amongst those hues. She thinks: What do they wear? What do they sip at night? and then culls inspiration wherever she can find it--magazines, catalogues, and swatches of fabric--to piece together what this person's life and home might look like.
Even a professional needs a moment to just sit and let the inspiration flow. Using a 19-foot farmhouse table Genevieve splays all 24 of the Valspar 2016 Colors of the Year in front of her so she can see how they interact with one another. Pay attention to how those rich blues and greens lend a trusting and artisanal feeling that we can find in the “Good Company” palette.
Sketch It Out
There's something sacred about putting pen to paper, and this act is certainly not lost on an interior designer. No matter how far technology has come, the creative process is more constructive when you can touch, sketch and move. Just think about that time you planned out your kitchen remodel on the back of a napkin.
The Color Strategists at Valspar have curated the Valspar 2016 Colors of the Year to reflect real lifestyle experiences. For example, the “You Do You” palette shown above is inspired by new standards, acceptance and individuality. Or as Genevieve likes to call it “Cuba meets Frida Kahlo in a Brooklyn foyer.” Using these tangible examples helps people to better understand how they might incorporate the colors within their own home.
All in the Family
Remember those 24 colors we started with? Looks like they each found some company, including a perfectly coordinated white which comes in handy when choosing a shade for your ceiling or trim. Here Genevieve displays all four of the Valspar 2016 Color Trend palettes in their entirety. Which one are you drawn to?
