6 New Coats to Keep You Cozy

Major layers ahead

coats email

You might be able to get away with one bathing suit all summer long (we wore our black maillot to death), but we’re calling it: There’s just no way you can do only one coat for fall.

Why’s that, you ask? For starters, autumn weather is as wacky and unpredictable as it gets. One sunny day, you need only a lightweight vest; the next, you’re up to your knees in a freak snowstorm.

We teamed up with Nordstrom to bring you the essential guide to outerwear. We’re talking six stunning styles with luxurious accents, rich textures and modern silhouettes.

Check them out and stay cozy-chic from now until spring.

Puffer

There’s a reason these puffy pieces keep popping up year after year (um, they’re the warmest ever). But this season’s down jackets won’t make you look like a Day-Glo marshmallow. Sleeker, longer silhouettes hit at mid-thigh rather than at high hip and stylish accents abound--think faux-fur trim, shearling-lined hoods and funnel-neck collars. We can’t imagine a more functional topper.

Wrap Coat

Like a pea coat (minus the hassle of all those pesky buttons), the wrap coat falls somewhere between a classic trench and a comfy robe. It boasts the same dressed-up functionality as an overcoat, but this silhouette is decidedly more modern, thanks to an oversized shawl collar and a cinch-able tie waist that creates a soft, feminine shape. Cashmere doesn’t hurt, either.

Faux Fur

Faux fur has come a long way, and this season’s shaggy batch proves it. Opt for a cropped style in a rich color (either muted or jewel tone), and layer with skinny denim and understated accessories.

Shearling

No longer reserved for urban cowgirls (or the après-ski set in Aspen), shearling is now just as likely to be seen gracing the frames of the world’s most fashionable. Embrace the trend with a moto-inspired silhouette, which feels fresh and edgy over skinny jeans and a chunky knit.

Menswear

The secret is in the silhouette, which is boxier in the shoulders and straight through the waist and hips. Look for Don Draper-approved tweeds and pinstripes, or make a major statement with oversized plaid.

Parka

Not to be overlooked, sporty parkas and anoraks have always had their place in our closet. This throw-it-on-and-go staple adds instant adventure to weekend wear. Look for utilitarian accents like cargo pockets, roll-tab sleeves and hideaway hoods.
