CAN YOU DIG IT?
A health chain's tasty reinvention
Grabbing a quick lunch is easy. Grabbing a healthy quick lunch can prove more difficult. Not so, says Dig Inn, a new Manhattan-based fast-ish mini chain where the food is low-fat, seasonal, local and--perhaps most important--seriously delicious.
Launched a few weeks ago as a reinvention of power-shake-friendly Pump Energy, the five Dig Inn locations retain Pump's low-cal commitment, with a new emphasis on flavor and fresh ingredients (i.e., no more protein powder). Executive chef Daniel Angerer has worked with the likes of Jean-Georges Vongerichten and David Bouley, and it's easy to see how his fine-dining background informed Dig Inn's sophisticated offerings.
The menu includes updated twists on comfort food, with standouts like Indian-spiced carrots ($3) and sweet-potato casserole ($3). We can't get enough of the broccoli-and-quinoa salad ($8), which uses only a handful of ingredients but tastes complex and hearty.
Customize your own lunch plate with choices of protein, grains and sides, or pack up a "picnic pint" for later-in-the-day (guilt-free) noshing.
