Benefit's beauty bliss hits the Big Apple
Thirty years ago, two San Francisco sisters started a beauty revolution with a homemade rose-petal cheek stain. Today, Jean and Jane Ford's Benefit Cosmetics is a global phenomenon beloved for its quick-fix makeup.
While it's easy to get our Benefit fix at Sephora, the brand's charming new stand-alone in SoHo (its first in New York) turns makeup shopping into a glamorous experience with crystal chandeliers, blush-colored walls and antique shelves stocked with beautifully packaged face creams and exfoliators.
In addition to special-occasion applications ($60) and private makeup lessons ($100), the shop boasts a full-service salon for waxing, threading and airbrush tans. We sat down at the "On the Spot" Beauty Bar (where walk-ins are welcome), had our brows threaded into tip-top shape ($28) and got some extra definition with the Brow Zings Shaping Kit ($30).
Next, it was time to get pretty. A makeup artist primed our skin with The POREfessional balm ($29) then swept the magic, cream-to-powder foundation, Some Kind-a Gorgeous ($29) on our cheeks and nose. A few pats of Ooh La Lift ($22) under our eyes and a dab of Posietint ($29) on our lips had us looking remarkably fresh-faced.
We're breaking out the belles and whistles.
