SoulCycle goes beyond the bike with farmers' market tours
Since opening in 2006, indoor-cycling studio SoulCycle has amassed a legion of fans for its candlelit rooms, high-energy instructors and intense, full-body bike-workouts. Weekly schedules become available at noon every Monday and classes sell out within the hour.
Every Saturday after her 8:30 a.m. class at SoulCycle Union Square, the longtime vegetarian guides riders through a 45-minute tour of the market, where she introduces them to vendors while shopping for a different healthy recipe from her favorite restaurants, like Venice, California's Gjelina. Riders will shop for peak-of-season ingredients and get produce-picking tips (a good one: the smaller the strawberry, the bigger the flavor).
At last Saturday's inaugural tour, riders shopped for a kale-and-fennel salad with fresh ricotta, and got free samples of honey-glazed goat cheese and just-baked sourdough. Bonus: The market is blissfully crowd-free at 9:30 in the morning.
Tours are complimentary to all SoulCycle riders, and will be available through Memorial Day weekend. You don't have to attend the early class to take the tour, but both the workout and the treats are worth setting your alarm for.
