Work out like an Olympian
As much as we love our treadmill-and-reality-TV time, we know we’ll be itching for some next-level exercise the second the Olympic coverage kicks off. Get a jump start with workouts inspired by a few favorite sports.
Gymnastics Clear your schedule this Saturday: Uptown Pilates’ Madison Avenue location is hosting a special day chock-full of Olympic-themed classes, enhancing techniques for running, strength training and more. For us, though, the most fun looks to be the rhythmic gymnastics-inspired class--complete with props. 903 Madison Ave. (between 72nd and 73rd sts.); 212-717-3903 or uptownpilates.com
Swimming Need a reminder of the benefits of aquatics? Michael Phelps’s abs are enough of a PSA for us. Dive in to Asphalt Green’s renowned indoor swimming center. (A member of its very own masters team is competing in London, seriously.) Adult water-aerobics classes are available for all fitness levels, or you can simply swim at your own pace in the 50-meter pool. 1750 York Ave. (at 91st St.); 212-369-8890 or asphaltgreen.org
Rowing Midtown’s Smart Workout is known for its small group classes (we’re talking five people max) and offers more than 30 different types of creative workouts--from cheerleading to Hula-Hoop. But for head-to-toe toning, try one of its indoor rowing classes. You may hate us for it, but your arms, back, core, legs and, well, everything else won’t. 124 E. 40th St. (between Park and Lexington aves.); 212-661-1660 or smartworkout.net
