New guides to pique your wanderlust
With summer travel on the horizon, you're armed with all the web tools and iPhone apps you can handle for mapping out your next journey. But there's something to be said for old-fashioned travel books.
Below, our favorite new offerings that go above and beyond your standard "go here/eat that" fare:
Select Guides Insight Guides' new city series ($12) features more than 100 insider experiences written by local experts with agendas for various travel destinations--Hong Kong, Istanbul and Rome, to name a few. Organized by what you're "in the mood for" (romance, ancient history, fine dining, etc.), these purse-friendly guides are great for both the organized and the spontaneous traveler.
Indagare The Mapped Out series ($13 a book or $55 for 5) from Indagare, a member-based website for sophisticated travelers, provides three-day essential itineraries, maps and eating/shopping tips for five major European cities. We particularly love the handy fold-out map that's just the right size to stow away in a small clutch.
City Secrets Architect Robert Kahn has compiled and edited this unique series ($20 to $25 a book) of personal vignettes with an arts-and-buildings bent--the books include recommendations from writers, historians, gourmands and other notables. So far he's created guides for Italy, London, New York and Rome, with more cities on the way.
