Maybe it’s the buzz surrounding Baz Lurhmann’s Great Gatsby adaptation, but this season we’re spotting 1920s-inspired fashions on some of the most unlikely characters.

One way to get the look without going full-on flapper: drop-waist dresses, which are flattering, comfortable and generally summer-ready.

Here, a few modern interpretations:

Slouchy and casual As the temperature soars, we’re looking for clothing that’s breathable and light. Sleeveless drop-waist offerings from J. Crew ($37), Lacoste ($67) and Tory Burch ($450) all fit the bill, but our favorite is Topshop’s super-simple striped version ($40), which is versatile enough to throw over a swimsuit or pair with heels.

Sparkly and lacy Glitzy materials take the look from day to night. Alice and Olivia’s beaded tank dress ($495) and Dolce and Gabbana’s lace shift ($1,545) are both to die for, but we’ll probably nab the look for less at Asos ($90) or Dorothy Perkins ($44).

Bright and blocked Dropped waists are also great vehicles for color. Go trendy and blocky with looks from Marc Jacobs ($367), KAS New York ($198) and Urban Outfitters ($70). Or stick to one, bright hue; this Topshop offering ($84) could totally pass for DVF ($485).
