Juice bars have turned over a new leaf. No longer just health-food counters cranking out wheatgrass, today's juiceries have sleek designs and tastier, more inventive juice blends.
The secret is cold-pressing: juice extraction that chews up whole fruits and vegetables minus the high heat that destroys active enzymes. The result: more nutrients and more flavor.
Standouts include Moon Juice in Venice, a tranquil whitewash-and-blue-tile storefront where a former Lucques chef serves inventive mixes like smooth Beet Aid (beet, lime, cucumber) and spicy turmeric-root-and-apple juice to beachy locals.
In West Hollywood, we love the wood-paneled new Pressed Juicery. We're addicted to its thirst-quenching pineapple-pear-ginger-and-mint blend, as well as four refreshing green mixes in which kale, spinach and parsley are variously mixed with flavors like ginger, apple and lemon. And the made-to-order almond-milk smoothies are a yummy, quick breakfast.
At Beverly Hills' bright new Kreation Juicery, juice mixes and smoothies are supplemented with special offerings such as alkalized water floating with chia seeds, the omega-3 and protein-rich superfood. On a recent visit, a breathtaking lemon-ginger-and-cayenne-pepper shot jolted away our oncoming cold. With a payoff like that, we're squeezing in time for frequent visits.
