Just as Well
Get serious about feeling better at Hamsa
Down-to-earth spiritual healer Monica Yearwood makes one thing clear about Hamsa Ayurveda & Yoga, her new lifestyle center in Lincoln Square: The journey to wellness isn’t a feel-good fantasy.
Hamsa’s personalized detox programs ($200 to $2,000)--many of which can be conducted at home after a consultation at the spa--are meant to rigorously eliminate toxins. From the four-week detox course to the 21-day weight-loss regimen, the programs include combinations of classroom-based dietary instruction, herbal supplements, meditation, specially prepared meals and more. (The next detox begins on February 4.)
Even yoga is a serious endeavor; there are no drop-in classes, only series like the four-week, stress-reduction-focused program being offered this summer for $280. Classes are kept at seven students or less in order to encourage individual growth.
But there are less intense options on the spa menu. During our visit, Yearwood brought us to a blissed-out state with an herbal steam and an insanely relaxing shirodhara treatment ($185) that consisted of warm oil gently poured onto our forehead, leaving us feeling tranquil and alert.
The sunny and clean space is more functional than your typical terrycloth escape, but you’ll be well taken care of. Yearwood, after all, is a veteran of the Four Seasons spa.
