The (Actual) Right Way to Use Hair Mousse

Mousse. It’s so underrated, so misused and yet so necessary for nailing that perfect at-home blowout (or artfully disheveled waves). Used correctly, it can give you incredible lift and weightless texture. But it all comes down to application.

What you need: A can of mousse and a vented brush.

What you do: Give the can a good shake. Then take a cue from Style Sprinter and pump a tennis ball-sized puff directly onto the brush (not your palms!) before combing it through damp (not sopping wet!) strands. Don’t be afraid to get into your roots with the stuff. In fact, it’s meant to boost volume there the most.

Why it works: The mousse will slowly seep through the vented slots so that it gets evenly distributed as you brush (as opposed to uneven application from your hands).

What this means for you: Zero crunch once dried.

It also helps to perk up limp, day-two strands. Just rewet, reapply and blast your roots with a dryer.
